What If We Are All “Likely” Heros?

Many times when an unknown person does something deemed heroic, they are called an unlikely hero. A person that others never notice enough to put any type of heroic expectations on.

In this world we are all inhabiting together, isn’t it likely that we are all heroes? We have been taught to play down our achievements so as to not get too cocky. Too big for our britches as they used to say.

What if we all decided to think of ourselves as heroes? Not just no-name shmoes and average joe’s. Would we conduct our lives in a different way? I’m thinking it’s worth trying this human experiment and seeing how it goes.

Each of us enacts a moral code we devised for ourselves. We are comfortable with it and conduct ourselves accordingly. Not all heroic acts get noticed because not all heros by their very nature sing their own praises. That’s just fine.

But heroism is different than merely doing someone a favor. Heroism is more consequential than that. It can actually save a life, or change the way the world itself appears to a troubled soul. When thinking what I can do for others, I like to recall the heroic acts that have been done for me. Like the brain surgeon who operated on my brain when I had an aneurysm. Or people who took me in when I had no place to live as a teenager.

Stuff like that.

All humans have the capacity to be likely heroes. Perhaps we need to consciously act that way and see what happens. I know for myself it makes this world feel less scary. Less like I have no control and more like a human amongst other humans doing whatever I can. Sleep on it.
