My Case For Clutter

Confessions of a Multi-Tasker

My entire adulthood and most of my childhood, I’ve been a prideful multi-tasker.

Brushing my teeth while raking leaves, doing laundry while cooking dinner, vacuuming while watching the Oscars. There is an inherent feeling of really getting stuff done that is addictive and fills me with superiority.

These days, task oriented experts and declutter activists are insisting that the opposite is true. That “uni-tasking” is more efficient. Top selling books are convincing people that doing one thing at a time is the way to go.

Is it a crime to admit we’re all not wired that way? Because during the fifteen minutes the brownies are baking, I can clean three toilets. It feels so good! My entire adult life and most of my childhood, I’ve been a prideful “getting things done” person.

Accept when it comes to decluttering. This is the other issue making the top ten book lists. I’ll admit the piles of unopened mail in the shoebox on my dining room table do stress me out while I’m trying to enjoy my just-baked brownie/dinner. But the brownie cannot wait! It’s only “just baked” for a few precious minutes before it’s just…a brownie like any other. That is why instead of decluttering while the brownies baked, I made cinnamon butter.
