The Coolest Generation

It’ll Never Only Just Be Rock n Roll To Us

As we age, alot of unexpected things happen. Folks we thought would always be around leave the planet. And we think, what? Just a few short years ago we were all hanging out. Why is this person gone, now?

We wonder what that means for us, and our own time on this Earth. Yes, we go through our days differently now. We do what needs to be done. We earn a living. We make sure we have some kind of health insurance. We look at our funds.

Then we go to the gym or our workout class. We cook what we need to cook to be healthy. But we know. Oh we know now. From the look on our ailing friends faces. We are all only here for a finite amount of time.

We never looked at our lives this way before. We didn’t have to. Then, all of the sudden so many people we know are Leaving the Earth soon. Future plans take up less real estate in our brains even though we don’t like it that way at all.

Cautiously, we try to re-evaluate. As best we can. Or we attempt to.

But the every day clutter of life intrudes. Even though we know in our souls how inconsequential it all is, we must do it. Floors get dusty. Cars need to be replaced. Dog food run, look for a window cleaner as we no longer “do ladders.”

How did this happen to us? The rock n roll generation? We wore our favorite band t-shirts and planned our summers around music and tours and camping and a “lame” family vacation to an amusement park. Those fun things are in the shadows of our lives. These days serious things must be dealt with.

We want to run and hide and just chill but it feels impossible now. Like the last chord ringing through the Moog Synthesizer at a Genesis concert, we hang on to being “relevant” as much as we can, but everything keeps changing. Unfortunately, the song does not remain the same. We are relics, raised to believe we’d always be at the heart of it.

That blood pressure pills and colon health would never be words that came out of our super cool, just hangin’ mouths. Such a delimma. To soldier on through life as it is and retain who we were. It’s important to us. So very important. I dare say it’s imprinted in our DNA, and I think that’s as good as any excuse to keep rockin’ on. I’ll see ya at a concert this summer. All the bands we love still tour. For a few hours at least, our youthful spirit gets to play and the seriousness of life fades away and we truly believe the song remains the same.
